Residential Initiatives

The Consortium has pinpointed two major challenges facing the industry: connected requirements and genuine customer engagement. CEE has led in shaping connected requirements necessary for all utilities. The next challenge is to populate acceptable values within the CEE connected framework for standing initiatives. Secondly, as members migrate from emphasizing program measures to satisfying customer needs, they are developing motivational strategies. Interaction needs to extend far beyond a one-time rebate.

CEE takes the lead in burgeoning markets. In 2015 CEE members advanced Residential Space Heating and Cooling, Lighting, Appliances, and Consumer Electronics. Members are exploring DSM program models, in particular, strategies to achieve greater savings through bundled measures, up- and mid-stream incentives, common messaging on systems, and tiered specifications for new construction. Manufacturers entered their most advanced efficient technologies and beautiful designs into competition for another successful round of Lighting for Tomorrow.

CEE also designs comprehensive, data-driven game plans for addressing end uses. For example, the residential sector absorbed 28% of US delivered electricity and 42% of natural gas, and generated approximately 30% of total US carbon dioxide emissions in 2015. Space heating and cooling dominate energy use in the sector, followed by water heating appliances. Lighting continues to represent a large opportunity, as does consumer electronics. Commercial Initiatives

Commercial initiatives form a matrix of solutions. Each supports members seeking systemic approaches and connected device opportunities, as well as ways to promote the benefits of more efficient equipment. In 2015 CEE addressed the single highest volume commercial lighting opportunity with a mass-market replacement strategy: the installed base of inefficient fluorescent tubes. In addition, CEE raised the bar for high efficiency products through revisions of Commercial Lighting Systems, Gas Boilers, and Kitchens. All of these high priority efforts evaluated program approaches and needs in terms of their potential to generate savings.

The commercial sector absorbed 27% of US electricity sales and 29% of natural gas sales in 2015, generating approximately 27% of total US carbon dioxide emissions. Space heating and cooling dominate energy use in the sector, followed by lighting. Water heating continues to represent a large opportunity. Studies indicate that a reasonable expectation of the savings potential in existing commercial buildings is 10–20% of current energy use. Explore…


Industrial Initiatives

CEE industrial initiatives focus on aggressive program targets and economic growth. Strategic Energy Management, for example, sets an agenda for continuous improvement for energy performance, productivity, and competitiveness. Participation has quadrupled since its beginning in 2011. In Motor Systems, members have defined an expanded scope that includes pumps, compressed air, and variable frequency drives. Through consensus process, they agreed to common elements for compressed air audits, bringing multiple methods into a common baseline measurement. As well, forward-looking Industrial Program Planning examine optimal conditions for pursuing combined heat and power projects successfully.

In 2015 the industrial sector consumed 45% of the US electricity sales and 29% of natural gas sales, while generating approximately 43% of total US carbon dioxide emissions.
